The Department of Agriculture is seeking to fill one vacant Assistant Agricultural Commissioner/Sealer of Weights and Measures position. The Agriculture Department is located in Concord, California.

The Agricultural Commissioner’s Office consists of over 40 employees and has a budget of over $7 million. The Contra Costa County Department of Agriculture under the direction of the California Department of Food and Agriculture, Department of Pesticide Regulation, and Division of Measurement Standards, is responsible for conducting regulatory and service activities pertaining to the agricultural industry and the consumers of our county. The primary purpose and objective of this office is the promotion and protection of the county’s agricultural industry, environment, and citizens. We are looking for someone who is:

  • A leader with the ability to organize the work and effectively coach the team
  • A strong communicator and able to effectively communicate with stakeholders and other staff members
  • Flexible and able to shift priorities quickly as needs change
  • Knowledgeable of the agricultural and weights and measures programs
  • Knowledgeable of pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations related to food, agriculture, weights and measures
  • Experienced with personnel matters, evaluations, interviews, hiring, training, and onboarding new employees
  • Experienced with administration, budget, work plans, accounting, and State and local contracts

 
What you will typically be responsible for:

  • Participating in managing the development and implementation of the Department’s goals, objectives, and priorities, recommending and administering policies and procedures
  • Assessing and monitoring workload, administrative and support systems, and internal reporting relationships; identifying opportunities for improvement, directing and implementing changes
  • Overseeing the work of subordinate management personnel, providing assistance with training and personnel matters, and completing personnel performance evaluations
  • Assisting in the county budget process, work plans, invoices, and the annual financial report for CDFA
  • Representing the department in meetings and conferences
