Under general direction of the Agricultural Commissioner and/or the Chief Deputy Agricultural Commissioner, the Deputy Agricultural Commissioner plans and supervises the implementation of department programs in assigned specialized fields of agricultural inspection, coordinates and oversees field operations through Supervising Agricultural Inspector/Biologists and performs related duties as assigned. This position may be assigned to any of the divisions within the Agricultural Commissioner’s Office dedicated to the programs of Pesticide Use Enforcement and Environmental Monitoring; Pest Exclusion and Pest Eradication; Pest Mitigation including the Pierce's Disease Control Program; and Standards and Compliance as well as several smaller and more limited programs.
The successful candidate will have an extensive knowledge and understanding of the role of the Agricultural Commissioner's Office as both an inspection and compliance entity, and a public service provider with multiple stakeholders. This individual will demonstrate considerable knowledge of the Civil Service Merit System and how to work effectively within it. Excellent communication, and inter-personal, and collaborative skills to address issues that may be challenging and tense through tact and diplomacy are required.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate some knowledge of the principles and techniques of management, and the ability to learn and contribute effectively to a strategic systems improvement organizational process.
Deputy Agricultural Commissioners receive management (MB4) benefits and are not eligible for overtime compensation.
