Description

Under general direction, to supervise and assist in the administration and coordination of the agricultural and weights and measures inspection and enforcement program; and to do related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Under the direction of the Agricultural Commissioner/Sealer of Weights and Measures is responsible for field duties and assisting in departmental administration; may act for the Commissioner/Sealer in that person's absence; and performs other related duties as assigned.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate has substantial experience in the administration of Agricultural and Weights and Measures programs as well as the development and implementation of departmental policies and procedures. They consistently approach their work with innovation, creativity and big picture thinking. They are an excellent communicator (both verbally and in writing) who can build productive and positive professional relationships both internally and externally, working with staff, partners, other agencies, the public and other stakeholders. They are skilled in conflict resolution and can maintain composure and compassion in challenging situations.

The Deputy Commissioner understands and embraces the importance of public service and will continuously seek ways to improve business procedures and processes. They are an experienced supervisor who effectively motivates staff, fosters continuous learning at all levels of the department and promotes a supportive team environment within the office. Additionally, the ideal candidate has demonstrated experience performing budgeting work and in preparing concise and accurate reporting for external agencies.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Performs all duties of Agricultural Standards Investigator III; assists the Agricultural Commissioner/Sealer of Weights and Measures in planning, coordinating and directing the operations of the department; conducts all phases of agricultural and weights and measures inspections; represents the department at state and local meetings as directed; assists in conducting office hearings on agricultural and weights and measures violations; prepares a variety of reports and correspondence; acts as department Safety Officer and Coordinator; develops and maintains department training programs; coordinates the temporary reassignment of personnel to handle heavy workloads or coverage due to absence; ensures safe conduct of department operations; makes presentations to interested groups on departmental programs as requested; acts for the Agricultural Commissioner/Sealer of Weights and Measures and supervises staff in that person's absence in all matters assigned.
